WHO WE ARE: DANIEL YANKELOVICH
Chairman & CO-Founder
Daniel
Yankelovich is chairman and co-founder of Viewpoint
Learning, whose central mission is to develop
specialized dialogues for public policy and business
that advance learning and civic engagement. Dan
is instrumental in defining the vision and direction
of Viewpoint Learning and developing new applications
of dialogue based techniques.
Dan has spent more than 40 years monitoring social
change and public opinion in America. Dan founded
and developed the well-known market research
firm of Yankelovich, Skelly and White, now Yankelovich
Partners, in 1958. He initiated the New York
Times/Yankelovich Poll, and founded Public Agenda,
a non-partisan not-for-profit, public policy
research organization, in 1976. He founded
DYG, Inc., a firm that tracks social and market
trends, in 1986.
Dan is the author of twelve books, including
Coming to Public Judgment: Making Democracy
Work in a Complex World (1991) and The
Magic of Dialogue: Transforming Conflict into
Cooperation (1999), which
was awarded the 1999 Common Ground Book Award
for Achievement in Conflict Resolution. His
latest book, Profit With Honor: The New Stage
of Market Capitalism, was published by Yale
University Press in April 2006.
Dan was a founding
president of the Society for the Advancement
of Socio-Economics, and is a Fellow of the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He has held professorships or other academic
affiliations with Harvard University, New York
University, The New School for Social Research,
University of California, Irvine and University
of California, San Diego's Civic Collaborative.
Educated at Harvard College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard, and the Sorbonne, Dan is a director of Loral Space & Communications and director emeritus of CBS Corporation, US West, Meredith Corporation and Diversified Energies, Inc.. He is a trustee of the Kettering Foundation, the Japan Society, and the Fund for the City of New York, and special advisor to the Aspen Institute. He is trustee emeritus and former chairman of the Educational Testing Service and a trustee emeritus of Brown University. Dan is a long-standing member of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he served on the membership committee.
Dan was awarded the Parlin Award for his pioneering work in marketing research, the Helen Dinerman Award of the World Association of Public Opinion Research and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the New York Chapter of the American Association of Public Opinion Research.
